To be honest, I hadn’t heard of the Sedu Ionic flat iron before my mom and I started this blog a few months ago. Most of my friends and my mom’s frizz head friends have or have used the other flat irons we reviewed here, but not the Sedu. I decided to order it from Amazon (you should see the arsenal of flat irons and hair dryers we have at our house—they end up making great presents at the holidays!). I had checked out the reviews before purchasing it and found that a lot of people were really pleased. The reviews were spot on!!
Absolutely NO Snagging
One of the major complaints of cheaper brands of flat irons is that they snag your hair because they get caught in the plates. I have to say that the ceramic plates on the Sedu are SO smooth. I have run my thick hair through the Sedu tens and tens of times now and have never once had a snag. Even with some of the more expensive brands of flat irons, you do have to be careful that they were constructed and engineered with hair snagging in mind. The Sedu gets 5 stars here!
1.5 Inch Tourmaline Infused Ceramic Plates
Most flat irons have just 1 inch plates, but the Sedu Ionic Pro Flat Iron has an extra half inch that really does improve the straightening process. Without a doubt, this extra plate space helps to decrease the amount of time you have to straighten your hair and the best part I found was that it didn’t add any bulk weight to the flat iron. It is advertised on the Sedu website as using lightweight and high strength composite materials that are often used in aerospace industries.
The one complaint I had about the extra half inch of plate space was that it makes curling your hair with a flat iron a bit more difficult. I had been used to using a one inch plate to curl and put loose waves in my hair, so I think I will just use and recommend this iron for straightening purposes.
I do have to say, and a lot of the reviews confirm, that your hair will definitely be sleek and shiny after running the Sedu through it.
Adjustable Temperature Control
The Sedu is truly made for all hair types and it comes with an adjustable temperature control that you can easily manipulate. One great piece of information that they include on their website is some heat suggestions for different types of hair.
370-400°F (coarse, very thick, ethnic)
350-370°F (wavy, curly)
330-350°F (normal, textured)
300-330°F (thin, easy to curl)
240-300°F (fragile, very fine)
*Update: July 1, 2012: I just used the Sedu last night to straighten my hair for a dinner I was going to. It is 92 degrees out and the heat index makes it feel like 102. I went to dinner and we then went dancing, which usually would make the hair around my face start to curl up and frizz. I was so pleasantly surprised when I went to the restroom that my hair was still in place and looked like I JUST straightened it. Not only that, I woke up this morning and went for a run, which ALWAYS makes the hair around my face frizz—again, NOTHING! I am very impressed with the strength and straightening capabilities of this flat iron.
Negative Ions and All That Good Stuff!
Of course, the Sedu Ceramic Pro Flat Iron also has the negative ion technology, and tourmaline infused ceramic plates that create a better and healthier environment for your hair during the straightening process. These days, it is really important to make sure that whatever flat iron you’re buying is ceramic (or even better—tourmaline!). With all of the polutants and chemicals that we expose our hair to, we need to make sure that at home, we treat it well!
What Are Customers Saying?
Amazon reviewers gave it 4 out of 5 stars, which is not too shabby considering the number of competitors out there. Obviously, since we are reviewing it, we felt that it made the cut and would be of great value to our frizzy-headed readers. Read on to see what others said:
- “I received this iron and immediately used on my curly hair. It came out bone straight in just a few minutes! Two days later, no change.”
- “The first thing you notice about the sedu is that it is so light. It feels like nothing in your hands. It straightens your hair immediately with one pass. My hair looks just as good as when my stylist does it, and I did it myself in very little time!”
- “For years I had excellent results with a wet to dry professional iron until recently my thick curly hair became slightly more fine and wet to dry irons were making my hair a bit too flat. I did some research and found Sedu to be the top rated, best selling flat iron and thought I would give it a try and I am thrilled, the Sedu truly does deserve its position as the best flat iron out there!”
One of the complaints that some people had, and I did experience myself, was the outside of the plates does get very hot and makes it difficult to hold anywhere but the handle. As long as you are careful while straightening, the ergonomic design of the handle should prevent you from having to grasp anywhere else!
There were some other complaints about the Sedu starting to not work as well after a few months, but if you read most reviews, you’ll find that every flat iron has some reviews like this. At the end of the day, flat irons are a piece of technology that sometimes malfunction or stop working properly, for one reason or another. I believe it does happen more frequently with inexpensive, drugstore brands because the level of care and design is less. You also have to pay attention to the fact that many people misuse these products. You’re not supposed to wrap the cord around the flat iron while it is still hot because of the fact that it will wear down the cord—this happens whether you are using a $15 flat iron or a $250 flat iron! It’s common sense!
Where Can I Buy The Sedu?
There are a number of website and online marketplaces that you can purchase the Sedu Pro Flat Iron, but Amazon will always have the best price. As of today, the price is $126.95. I have done a ton of research and saw this same flat iron selling for nearly $200 on other websites. When you go with a trusted website like Amazon, you can be assured that you’re getting a quality product!
